Ben Aldar Blackcurrant

Ben Aldar Blackcurrant is a traditional commercial variety prized for processing, juicing, and winemaking. Its late flowering provides protection against spring frosts in colder regions. Highly productive, it bears firm 1 cm berries that ripen in July with concentrated, sharp, tannic flavours. The compact bushes make efficient use of orchard space. Ben Aldar was developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute and released in 1989.

Blackcurrants boast high levels of vitamins and antioxidants contribute to a healthy diet. Though blackcurrants can certainly be enjoyed fresh, they shine in various preserves and baked goods, infusing dishes with their distinctive flavour and aroma. Popular uses include jellies, syrups, cordials, wines, and vinegars.
