About Our Trees

Quality

At Prairie Hardy Nursery, we operate our artisanal fruit and nut tree nursery with a deep passion for preserving genetics, providing you with the best quality specimen at an affordable price.

We grow carefully sourced cultivars and seedlings selected for their high quality: good tasting, prairie hardiness and disease resistance. We graft and grow our trees in hardiness zone 3 (discover your hardiness zone here).

Naturally Grown in Living Soil

Our trees are raised in nutrient-rich, living soil teeming with beneficial microbes, organic matter, and fungi. We use permaculture and old-world planting techniques to grow our trees naturally, without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides.

Why Bare Root Trees are the Best Choice

Most of our prairie trees are grown and sold as bare root, with the exception of some smaller seedlings grown in air-pruned pots, making them economical, easy to handle, and highly reliable for planting. Unlike potted trees, our bare-root trees are not root-bound and benefit from forming natural symbiotic relationships with fungi and bacteria in the soil. They are superior to most trees you will find at your local box store or garden centre.

When you choose a bare-root tree, you’re investing in:

- Healthy Roots: Grown free in soil, not restricted by pots.

- Transplant Success: Young trees are less prone to transplant shock.

- Shipped right to your doorstep (or P.O. Box): Our dormant trees are carefully packed with damp moss to keep roots moist and healthy.

Bare root trees are the superior choice for growing and transplanting.

How to Order and Shipping

Our grafted fruit trees are typically 2–3 feet tall (depending on the growing season) and may be pruned back for safe shipping. In early spring, we carefully dig up the trees while they’re still dormant, ensuring they arrive ready to thrive in your garden. Read more in our How to Order and Shipping section to learn more!

Planting Your Cold-Hardy Tree

Reading the plant descriptions you will learn about the details of each cultivar, we do our best to accurately describe their recommended method of planting for success and hardiness zone. Don't be afraid to experiment!

A detailed planting instruction will be included in your tree package.

We are continuously expanding our catalogue, and are always interested in finding new specimens. Feel free to reach out to us if you know of an interesting tree we should propagate.
